Should my kiddo move up to Imagine That?

Should my kiddo move up to Imagine That?

If your child is getting close to 3, you might be wondering:  should we move up to Imagine That! or stay in Our Time for one more term? This is another really common question — and a good one.  The answer? It depends on your child, your family, and your goals. And just always, there’s no rush and no wrong choice.

Our approach at Busy Bees: Follow the child

At Busy Bees, we continue to respect each child’s unique rhythm of growth. The transition from toddler to preschooler can be wide and varied.   Some kids are raring to go with pretend play and independence, while others need a bit more time to settle, watch or stay close.

We believe in meeting your child where they are and growing from there.   Both Our Time and Imagine That! are rich in music, movement, and connection, they just offer different experiences for different stages.

Our Time vs. Imagine That: What’s the difference?

Understanding the learning mode and classroom experience helps when making this decision.

🐝 Our Time (15 months–3 years): Learning mode: Primarily Imitative

Toddlers learn by watching and copying. They explore their world through movement, song, and emerging language and they thrive on repetition, predictability and play.

Class experience:

In Our Time, we follow playful story-based themes — through kitchens, farms, and buses — using songs, props, and stories to bring the journey to life.  Children:

  • Label familiar objects like food or animals
  • Copy actions and join in with group games
  • Move to music with scarves, balloons, and big body movement
  • Explore sound, rhythm, and cause-and-effect
  • Finish class with calm-down time, a story, and a goodbye routine

Your child’s POV: I can control my voice and my body. I am learning to move my body in new ways by trying out all kinds of things. My grownup helps me.

🧠 Imagine That! (3–5 years): Learning mode: Expanding and Applying Knowledge

Preschoolers are now experimenting with ideas, patterns, memory, and creative thinking. They’re learning how to express themselves in more complex ways and build connections between what they hear, feel, and do.

The class experience:
In Imagine That!, your child begins to take more ownership of the experience. We still sing and move, but now they:

  • Foster a strong sense of belonging with group rituals like a hello song featuring each child’s name and a name board
  • Use rhythm, musical songs, and body percussion games that engage and stimulate their sensory systems
  • Match sounds to pictures and build memory by recalling these each week
  • Enjoy musical games that link movement to musical timing
  • Build musical vocabulary and recognition, learning to identify patterns
  • Use their bodies in ways that support proprioception and refine motor control, using gross motor props like balance beams and stepping stones.
  • Play circle games that move from individual expression to group cooperation
  • Respond to visual cues and gradually participate in group-led movement games
  • Grow confidence through memory-based play, turn-taking, and early sequencing

Your child’s POV: I can think about the sounds I want to make, make them on purpose, and even describe them. I’m learning to work with my grownup and my friends in new ways — and it feels really good when we do it together.

What should I consider in moving to Imagine That?

Beyond your child’s readiness, there are also practical and emotional factors that might influence your decision.  Things like the time of day the class runs, how it fits around lunch or quiet time, travel distance, or even whether your child would prefer to stay with friends who are continuing in Our Time — all of these are valid considerations.  If you’ve only recently joined Our Time, it’s perfectly reasonable to want a little more time to settle before making a change.  Every family comes to class for slightly different reasons — some for routine, some for stimulation, some for connection and community.  At this stage of parenting, there are still lots of moving parts, and your choice doesn’t need to be based on milestones alone.  It can also be about what feels supportive, enjoyable, and sustainable for your family right now.

Here are a few other things to reflect on:

Your goals:
Are you looking to support independence, imagination, or more advanced listening and memory skills?  Is your child craving more challenge, or do they still enjoy repetition and simplicity?

The class environment:
Imagine That! includes more structure, more sequencing, and more opportunities for musical decision-making.  It’s still playful, but the play gets a bit deeper and more purposeful.

Developmental signs of readiness:
Your child may be ready to move up if they:

  • Can stay focused in an activity for several minutes at a time

  • Begin to recall things from past weeks or songs we’ve repeated

  • Show emerging memory skills (e.g. finishing a familiar song lyric or copying a rhythm)

  • Are interested in pretending, storytelling, and listening games

  • Can follow more detailed instructions (e.g. “Walk in the circle, then freeze when I stop the drum”)

  • Are beginning to enjoy being with a group of peers, not just near them

It’s also okay if they’re not quite there yet.  Staying in Our Time for one more term might help build those skills at their own pace, with confidence and connection still front and centre.

Let’s decide together

I see your child every week, and you see them every day. Together, we can figure out what feels like the right next step.  Whether that means staying in Our Time for one more term stepping into Imagine That! for more challenge, independence, and expression — we’ll support your child where they are and help them grow.

Try It and See

If you’re unsure, you’re very welcome to try out an Imagine That! class before making a decision.

  • If your child has a missed session to make up, I can apply it to an Imagine That! class.
  • If not, we can do a simple one-off swap from your regular class.

Sometimes, the best way to know is to see how they respond.
